Creative Writing Awards

We were delighted to welcome today the winners of the recent Island wide Creative Writing Competition, hosted each year by Highgate School. Prizes were awarded to children in each year group from Years 1 to 9. The title for the Primary School was A Day in the Life of....., and for the Secondary Adulthood: Embrace it or Hate it. Entries came from English-medium schools across the island, most of which were represented among the winners.

Highgate is particularly proud of our own winners:
Year 1 - Ioanna (First Prize), Year 2 - Annie (Second Prize), Year 3 - Alexandra (First Prize) & Katia (Second Prize), Year 4 - Lika (Commended)

Congratulations also to Karim (Foley's School) and Sofia (American Academy, Nicosia) who were given the Promising Young Writer's Award in recognition of their outstanding pieces of writing.

Book Week

During Book Week this year, our visiting author was Sheilla Helliwell, author of the Magic Murphy Stories and Children's Short Stories. Sheila visted all the classes in the Primary School on Tuesday 16th March, reading stories to the pupils and helping to inspire our young writers!

Annie's boat

Year 2 and 3 are going on a trip to Ayia Napa tomorrow to visit a man who has been building a boat. Annie made this lovely model as a present for him. Well done, Annie!

Tag Rugby Competition

Highgate is extremely proud of its Tag Rugby teams, following the National Competition held yesterday in Limassol. Our two teams - Under 9s and Under 12s - played schools from many other schools.


 

Although we have only been playing rugby for a few months, our teams played magnificently and showed great determination and team spirit. Congratulations also to Ms. Emma, our chief coach and team motivator! Well done everyone!

Science Fair


Yesterday, our Year 5 class, together with the Year 5 pupils from Rainbow School, hosted a Science Fair for their parents, fellow pupils and other visitors. The pupils enthusiastically showed what they had learned as they prepared for the event and carried out experiments for their visitors. Teddybarns had fun too!

Teddybarns

Teddybarns visited Ms. Derya's, Ms. Yvonne's and Ms. Sofia's classes last week. The boys and girls looked after him very well! This week, Teddybarns will go with these classes on their visit to the Protaras Aquarium to learn more about the fish and other creatures which live under the sea.

At the Fire Station

Pre-Reception visited the Fire Station yesterday. They had a lovely time and were even allowed to wear the fireman's helmet and sit in the fire engine!

Year 6 History Projects

Year 6 pupils have completed their History projects about World War II. They presented them in many different formats, all of which were full of information about the period. Liza even added hers to her own website! You can view it here:

UN Art Competition Winners


Recently, the UN asked our pupils to draw pictures with a Road Safety theme. The 5 best pictures will be made into road signs which will be displayed in the UNPA to encourage better standards of driving and road safety.
There were many entries of a very high standard. However, only five prizes could be awarded and we are delighted to announce that prizes were awarded to the following pupils:

1st - Sila (Year 4)
2nd - Liza (Year 6)
Runners Up - Michael (Year 1), Tamsin (Year 6) and Laura (Year 6)

Congratulations to the prizewinners and also to the other pupils who took part. We look forward to seeing the finished road signs and hope that they convey the Road Safety message to the wider community.
